Los Angeles Chargers and Jordan Davis look like perfect NFL Draft match
The Los Angeles Chargers need help on the interior defensive line, and Bulldogs DT Jordan Davis would be a perfect match for them in the 2022 NFL Draft.
The Los Angeles Chargers are off to an excellent start in the 2021 season, with big wins over the Chiefs, Raiders, and Browns in what was a tough opening schedule. Things will ease a bit for them which should give the Chargers a great opportunity to secure the division title and make the postseason.
The offense is humming, but the defense is pulling its weight as well. Of course, it did a little less in the 47-42 win on Sunday, but the personnel is there, especially in the secondary, and head coach Brandon Staley has them trending in the right direction. Staley loves to run “quarters” coverage, which requires defensive backs to drop quickly into off coverage to prevent explosive plays down the field. There are of course variations, but it’s a staple in the Chargers defense. What the defense does is force teams to have mistake-free 14 or 15 play drives to secure points.
Preventing big plays is huge, but what a lot of quarters does is make the defense susceptible to getting gashed against the run. The DBs that drop needed to crash hard in run fills to help out against light boxes. Having a good interior group that can delay runs from developing and free up second level defenders is another important factor, and it’s something the Chargers desperately need to help this defense out. As we saw Sunday, the Browns could run for chunk yardage at will.
While the trade deadline could be an opportunity, let’s look ahead to the 2022 NFL Draft, where a perfect pairing is emerging. Georgia’s Jordan Davis makes all the sense in the world for the Los Angeles Chargers to target this coming spring.
Listed at 6’6″ and 340 pounds, Davis is an absolute mountain in the middle of the Bulldogs defense. He’s been instrumental in their incredible start in a variety of ways. Davis certainly has the size and strength to take on blocks and be able to hold up against double teams. He can anchor well and won’t give up a line of scrimmage reset at the point of attack. He’s always been a good run defender, but Davis is starting to show some more quickness and explosion this year working out of his stance and getting into the backfield. Adding that ability to generate pressure and collapse the pocket is important for his draft stock.
The Los Angeles Chargers will need long-term help at the position that goes beyond what happens at the trade deadline to help out their run defense, and getting help in the 2022 NFL Draft in Jordan Davis would be a great match for Staley’s defense.
