Jacksonville Jaguars 2022 mock draft
Phidarian Mathis may not be the biggest name on a star-studded Crimson Tide defense, but he is still a valuable player.
Mathis is effective at both stopping the run and the pass. As a run stopper, he’s big at 6-foot-4, 312 pounds, has good strength, and is good at clogging up running lanes. As a pass rusher, he can win with strength, but he also moves pretty well for someone of his size, so he can win with quickness as well.
At this point in the draft, it’s all about adding depth and finding players who can add value as backups. Amari Gainer provides value in his versatility, last year he played over half his snaps from the slot, while this year thus far he is lining up on the edge as a defensive lineman much more often.
He also simply has the level of athleticism necessary to make a roster at the next level as well, he isn’t freakishly athletic by any means, but he does have a solid speed and strength.
Jalen McKenzie has some projectable traits to play at the next level. He’s got solid size at 6-foot-5, 320 pounds to go along with good movement skills.
The most important thing for McKenzie is proving himself at the college level as last season he did get beat too often. Ultimately, he does have the talent to make an NFL roster it’s just a matter of whether he’ll show consistent enough play at USC to warrant a draft selection.
Coby Bryant fits the mold of a late-round pick, he’s someone who doesn’t jump off the screen athletically, but is athletic enough to make an NFL roster and has produced over his career in college.
Bryant has a ton of experience as he’s played nearly 2,500 snaps in his career at Cincinnati. Last season he was named second-team all-AAC by PFF as he picked off four passes and had seven pass breakups.
Pat Fields is like a lot of other late-round picks as he’s shown potential, but there are also some question marks. He plays a bit of a safety/linebacker role as he’s listed as a safety but often lines up closer to the line of scrimmage in the box.
He has put together a solid season of play all around as in 2019 he graded out pretty well by PFF across most areas including run-stopping, tackling, and coverage, but last season he did not grade out well. His draft stock will ultimately depend a lot on how well he performs this season.
