BYU RB Tyler Allgeier

Tyler Allgeier (pronounced Al-Jeer) is one of the more underrated running backs in the country and could be a late round steal in the 2022 NFL Draft. His 2020 season was one to remember as he gained 1,130 rushing yards and scored 13 rushing TDs on an efficient 7.5 yards per carry. He even hauled in 14 passes at a clip of 12.4 yards per catch. The BYU standout was no doubt the beneficiary of having a future first round NFL QB running his offense, but Allgeier did enough on his own to warrant a look from scouts ahead of the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Fontana, CA, native made first team All-Independent last season in 2020, and College Football News made him the first team running back for their preseason All-Independent team this year. But what’s really intriguing to scouts are his build and his skill set.

Allgeier has a condensed frame at 5’11” 220, and he’s effective at running between the tackles as well as off tackle and on the perimeter. He’s shown elite vision, as he’s adept at finding the hole and exploding up through it. He’s not afraid to take on tacklers and will do so frequently, lowering his shoulder to pick up extra yards after contact.

He might not look like a speedster, but he absolutely has home run potential, as he displayed his top end speed on an 86-yard touchdown run on the blue turf against Boise State last season. In 2020, he had 6 games where he averaged 8 or more yards per carry and scored a touchdown in every game but 1.

Scouts might also appreciate the fact that Tyler Allgeier ran a lot out of shotgun and pistol formations, and his offensive line utilized a lot of zone blocking schemes, which NFL teams have come to favor more over the last several years. And finally, Allgeier only has 193 career carries on his odometer as of this writing. For context, Iowa State’s All-American running back Breece Hall has 488 career carries (and counting) and he’s played one fewer year than Allgeier. With an excellent 2021 season, Tyler Allgeier should hear his name called in the 2022 NFL Draft.
