2022 NFL Draft: Hokies OL Lecitus Smith Deserves More Attention

Virginia Tech Hokies offensive lineman Lecitus Smith deserves to be on the radar for the 2022 NFL Draft.

Virginia Tech started their season out with an impressive 17-10 win over the 10th ranked North Carolina Tar Heels, and continues the wild Coastal Division parity. It was a great game on the offensive and defensive side of the ball for the Hokies, and one of the standouts was offensive guard Lecitus Smith, who should get more national attention and should get on the 2022 NFL Draft radar.

Smith didn’t make the early interior offensive line rankings here at NFL Mocks, but got attention over at Pro Football Network. After watching his ability to chip and get to the second level with ease against UNC and his tenacious demeanor, it was time to quickly get over to some film and watch more (yes, during the game).

This writer came away extremely impressed. Smith has great controlled aggression. He’s a brick wall at the point of attack and stays balanced while looking to bury opponents at every chance. Late blitzing linebackers often end up on the ground against Smith, and his anchor is extremely impressive. He rarely gives up ground in pass protection, and his ability to use his shoulders and core to create torque and put defensive linemen on their back is excellent.

Even on the move, Smith stays engaged and maintains good balance and has the leg drive to move defenders well off their spot. Even on half pulls to the outside, he has the sufficient movement skills to get out into space and sustain blocks with good grip strength.

It continued tonight, as UNC couldn’t get any push when lined up against Smith. He was impressive working to the second level after combo blocks near the line. Lecitus Smith is well on his way to gaining national attention and rise up in 2022 NFL Draft rankings.
