Outlook

This is a huge year for Tyler Shough and how he projects in the 2022 NFL Draft. He’ll play at Texas Tech under third-year coach Matt Wells and offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie, who played quarterback for the Red Raiders and previously coached at TCU.

After going 4-8 in 2019 and going 4-6 last year in 2020, DraftKings has the Texas Tech over/under win total set at 4.5. And unfortunately, it’s going to be an uphill climb for Wells, Shough, and company to get over that total.

This year seems like a good news/bad news situation for Tyler Shough and his future. The good news is that, because Texas Tech likely won’t be very good and they play in the Big XII, where defense is optional, Shough will have every opportunity to rack up stats and show what he can do when it comes to throwing and running the football. Texas Tech will likely be trailing in most of their games at some point, giving Shough carte blanche to air it out.

The bad news is that he’s in a new system, with new teammates, in a new city halfway across the country. There’s likely to be some growing pains here. It doesn’t help that he went from Oregon, who won the Pac-12 last year and had the talent to match, to Texas Tech, where they have middling talent at best, they’ll be lucky to go 5-7, and simply making a bowl game will be considered a massive success.

So much of his future hangs on which Tyler Shough shows up for Texas Tech this year. Is it the world-beater who threw for 873 yards, 8 TDs, and 2 INTs on 66.2% of his completions in the first 3 games of 2020 at Oregon? Or will we see the player who struggled in the final 4 games of 2020 and threw for a measly 686 yards, 5 TDs, and 4 INTs on 62.4% of his completions while his team lost 3 out of 4?

While I wouldn’t consider it a sure thing that Tyler Shough declares for the 2022 NFL Draft, I think he shows enough promise this season (irrespective of team success) to intrigue some quarterback-deficient team, and he not only declares for the 2022 NFL Draft, but gets selected in the early to mid-fourth round.
