2022 NFL Draft: A make or break year for Tyler Shough
Weaknesses
Lack of experience is Tyler Shough’s chief weakness, as he only has 7 college starts on his ledger.
Shough turns 22 on September 28, 2021, and this may work against him as he’ll still only have two full years starting and be 23 by the time the 2022 NFL season gets into full swing. It’s not ideal to be older and inexperienced.
If he’s going to run a lot, it would help if he added 10-15 pounds onto his 6’5” 219-pound frame to better absorb punishment.
Shough really struggled in the second half of last season when the stakes were the highest and his team had the most to lose. Oregon lost 3 of their last 4 games and the lone game they won in that stretch against USC he only threw for 91 yards and had an interception.
It might be a bad sign that Tyler Shough was essentially chased out of Eugene by backup quarterback Anthony Brown, a three-star transfer from Boston College with ordinary stats and little upside.
He must make better reads. A couple of times per game Shough will make a foolish throw (often late over the middle), and it will either be intercepted or nearly intercepted. You sometimes wonder what he’s seeing.
He needs to improve his accuracy on intermediate and deep passes. Many deep throws were underthrown, and receivers had to slow down or stop to make the catch, giving the defender a chance to make a play on the ball when the receiver had already beaten their man.
Shough’s running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends at Oregon were very talented, and they made some nice plays on less-than-perfect passes that ended up as completions or big gains when lesser players might not have made those plays. There will likely be a significant drop-off in talent when it comes to those around him at Texas Tech.
Up to this point, Shough hasn’t really shown that he can consistently fit the ball into tight windows. This is because he hasn’t had to; his receivers at Oregon were often wide open. He’ll need to demonstrate his ability to complete tough passes in traffic if he wants to rocket up 2022 NFL Draft boards.
Shough needs to improve his overall consistency. He has to consistently make good decisions with the ball, consistently hit his receivers for big plays when they’re open, consistently play with sound mechanics, and consistently play better when the lights are the brightest.
