Player Comp: Ian Book

I was tempted to put Tim Tebow or Dak Prescott as my player comp for Brock Purdy as they were all quarterbacks who wore #15 in college and could make plays with their legs, but I ultimately landed on the recently drafted Ian Book out of Notre Dame.

Purdy and Book are similar in size (Purdy is 6’1” 210 and Book is 6’0” 206), they’re both from the American West (Book is from Sacramento, CA and Purdy is from Gilbert, AZ), and they both got their opportunities to start due to injuries above them on the depth chart. But how they really compare is their play style.

While neither quarterback is your traditional Johnny Manziel-type dual-threat quarterback, they can both run to pick up first downs, and their rushing stats back that up. Book ran for 1,517 yards and 17 touchdowns over his four-year career, and Purdy is on pace to finish his career with 1,252 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns.

The two quarterbacks both had their best statistical seasons in their second full year starting (2019 for both), and they both led their teams to the 2019 Camping World Bowl where they faced off against each other (Notre Dame won 33-9).

Purdy and Book also both guided their teams to winning seasons in each of their years at the helm for their respective schools in addition to making their conference’s championship games in 2020.

When it comes to projecting where Brock Purdy will be selected in the 2022 NFL Draft, a look at Ian Book could be a preview of where he goes. Book was drafted at the end of the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft at pick number 133 overall by the New Orleans Saints, who likely won’t need him to play right away. A similar draft position and team situation would make sense for Purdy as well.
