Minnesota Vikings: 3 must-see players in 2021 preseason

1. Kellen Mond, QB

The clock is officially ticking on Kirk Cousins with the Minnesota Vikings.

If some team is willing to take on one year and $35 million next offseason, the Vikings might happily unload Kirk Cousins in a trade if they like what they see from Kellen Mond, starting with his work in the 2021 preseason.

Mond may be more likely as a 2023 option for the Vikings given Cousins’ contract status and how tough it might be to move on from him ($45 million in dead money if released), but he can at least make the Vikings think about trading Cousins after this season if he doesn’t help get this team back into postseason contention.

Mond is a unique athlete at the quarterback position with a ton of in-game experience at Texas A&M. His situation is not all that dissimilar to Dak Prescott coming out of Mississippi State. Opinions were extremely split on Prescott that year, and he had some first-round traits with day two or three tape for most of his college career.

Mond is in a similar boat, but the talent is undeniably there.

With a body type and overall skill set comparable to Colin Kaepernick, Mond has the ability to beat you with his arm or legs but just needs to find some consistency with his accuracy from the pocket.

Preseason games will be massive for Mond and for the Minnesota Vikings getting a glimpse at a player who could potentially be their future at the position.
