The Indianapolis Colts may need to look for a veteran reinforcement after the Carson Wentz injury. Nick Foles should be available.

The Indianapolis Colts could be without QB1 Carson Wentz into the 2021 regular season and surgery is one of the options on the table after suffering a foot injury at training camp. This is undoubtedly unwelcome news coming out of Colts camp, which has unfortunately been sort of loaded with unwelcome news.

For the time being, 2020 fourth-round pick Jacob Eason is slated to get some extremely valuable reps that he certainly didn’t get last year when Philip Rivers was on the team and he would definitely not have gotten this offseason as Wentz was the undisputed QB1.

The news on Wentz’s foot is not positive whatsoever.

Eason is a talented young prospect, but the Indianapolis Colts may not be willing to bank what they hope is a playoff season — even if Wentz is just out for the start of it — on essentially a redshirted rookie.

Frank Reich was brought to the Indianapolis Colts after winning a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles. Something he certainly couldn’t have done without Carson Wentz…or Nick Foles.

Foles right now just so happens to be stuck in a situation in Chicago where the Bears might be willing to trade him for a really reasonable price.

The Bears are moving forward in the 2021 season with Andy Dalton as the starter and Justin Fields as the heir apparent. Foles is a fine QB3 if that’s what they want from him, but they can also save a nice chunk ($4 million) in cap space by trading a guy they have no intention of using this season.

A team like the Indianapolis Colts — with an obvious coaching connection to Foles — should be more than willing to pay the price of a late-round draft choice to acquire the veteran and former Super Bowl MVP especially considering Wentz’s current injury and injury history overall.

Time will tell on this one, but this trade seems like a no-brainer to go down at some point regardless of what the severity of Wentz’s injury winds up being. The Indianapolis Colts have playoff aspirations and they need to do everything possible to preserve those.

Foles may not be a splashy acquisition at this point but he played some really good football under Reich and perhaps could do it again.
