5 trade destinations for Miami Dolphins corner Xavien Howard
3. New Orleans Saints
The Saints are another team that would likely be firmly in talks should that happen over the next couple days to weeks. This likely stems from the belief that the Saints can indeed contend again in 2021, this time without Drew Brees.
The team is mostly back together minus Brees, with the defense getting an upgrade this offseason with the additions of Payton Turner and Pete Werner via the draft. The Saints also selected corner Paulson Adebo, who flashes plenty of ball skills, like Xavien Howard does.
Of course, there are a couple arguments against this move. One would be that there are depth issues at wide receiver and defensive tackle, and that those issues should be prioritized. Then, of course, there’s the cap, an issue that will once again come to light for the Saints next offseason. With extensions looming for players like Marshon Lattimore, Terron Armstead, Marcus Davenport, Marcus Williams, and Jameis Winston, it’s possible they focus there.
However, acquiring Howard and restructuring that deal might be in their best interest. Cap space opens up a bit more in 2023 and the cap wizards in NOLA could likely find a way to get Howard there, even if it costs moving on from Lattimore. It would be a fun short-term and long-term move.
