The best picks of the 2018 NFL Draft in every round
Fifth Round
149. Seattle Seahawks (via Denver Broncos from Washington) Michael Dickson, P, Texas
Many would advise against drafting special teams players. History has shown us that teams are just as likely to find the same caliber of talent amongst the undrafted free agent market as they would during Day 3 of the NFL Draft. The Seattle Seahawks decided against listening to that advice in the 2018 NFL Draft and decided to trade up to take Texas punter Michael Dickson in the fifth round.
The Seahawks beat the odds and landed a great special teams player in Dickson. Early in his career, Dickson has become one of if not the best punters in the league. During his first season, Dickson was named to the Pro Bowl and was named First-Team All-Pro.
A few weeks ago CBS named Dickson the best punter in the league going into the 2021 season and brought up a valid case for why that is. Since he was drafted in 2018 Dickson has averaged 49.6 yards per punt which is second-most in the league during that span and tenth most all-time. Also, his 41 punts inside the 10-yard line and 15 punts within the 5-yard line since 2018 are the most in the league in each category during that span. Last year Dickson had 32 punts within the 20-yard line which led the league.
There aren’t a lot of conversations about who is the best punter in the league. But Dickson has shown in his career up to this point that he is very involved in that conversation. Seattle agrees that Dickson is an elite punting talent considering that they gave him a 4 year $14.5 million extension this offseason making him one of the highest-paid punters in the league.
