2022 NFL Draft: Jalen Wydermyer is TE1 in upcoming draft
By Jonah Hovis
After breaking the Texas A&M tight end touchdown record, Jalen Wydermyer has all the tools in place to be the first tight end taken off the board in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Jalen Wydermyer is a big, physical player at the tight end position standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 265 pounds. Having the frame of an ox and the ability to run like a gazelle, the young man out of Texas A&M could easily be seen as a first-round talent being such an interesting prospect in this draft.
Wydermyer is a great pass-catching tight end at all levels on the field. Wydermyer’s thick frame makes him a dangerous threat in the red zone and also in deep one on one coverages down the field. The Aggie tight end also shows impressive footwork in routes to make quick cuts and stops in routes. Then the speed is another extra goody in his bag of tricks for Wydermyer and gives him a great ability to create separation at the top of his routes.
Where Wydermyer shows great ability in the passing game, he is not just a receiving tight end, as his game is a complete one at the position. After being a big receiver in high school, then making the transition in college to tight end, Wydermyer did not have much experience in run blocking going into his college career. Although with such a big frame and good athletic ability, he never really struggled in blocking situations. However, it is still an area of improvement for the young dual-threat tight end.
Jalen Wydermyer checks all the boxes even though he is still a fairly raw product at the tight end position. Last season he showed great production catching 46 catches for 506 yards and six touchdowns being Kellen Mond’s safety blanket. With a tight end going fourth overall this season in Kyle Pitts, this could start a new trend with taking tight ends early in the first round. Wydermyer is not on the same skill level as Pitts but has all the tools to be selected as a first-round selection next season in the 2022 NFL Draft.
