2022 NFL Draft: Is Iowa State RB Breece Hall the preseason RB1?
Weaknesses of Hall’s game
While Breece Hall is an excellent player, there are some things that he can improve upon in the 2021 season. It starts with his receiving ability. Despite 46 catches in his career, Hall doesn’t have much of a route tree, and mostly catches screens and swing routes. To become a true three down back, Hall needs to get better in this area in his junior season.
His patience is something else to watch. While it helps him out at identifying openings and is a plus towards his vision, there are times where he needs to have a bit more urgency getting downhill.
Flexibility is something else to watch. His movement skills are pretty good, and he can make defenders miss in space, but on runs that completely reverse direction, Hall isn’t very flexible in his hips to have smooth transitions, often having to gather step when he does. This could become an issue in outside/wide zone schemes.
Pass protection is the final thing to watch for Hall. He does have some solid reps, and he can survive reps well, but too many of said reps are him absorbing contact and upending defenders. If he gets a bit more consistent in this area, this won’t be an issue here.
