2022 NFL Draft Prospect: Sam Howell, North Carolina

If there’s a quarterback in this class that is already challenging Spencer Rattler to be the first quarterback off the board it’s Sam Howell. Entering his third season as the starting quarterback at North Carolina, Howell has already shown an NFL skill set that could have teams drooling by next summer.

Over 25 games as a Tar Heel, Howell has put together a rather impressive stat line. He has over 7,200 passing yards, throwing for over 3,500 in each of his first two seasons. He also eclipsed 30 touchdowns in both years for a career total of 68 while keeping his interceptions in single digits with seven in both 2019 and 2020.

In addition to his arm, he’s shown a willingness to do just about anything on the field. He has 186 rushing attempts for 181 yards and six touchdowns. The average yardage isn’t great, but a quarterback that can find the end zone of the ground is a plus. He’s also hauled in four receptions for 24 yards and another two touchdowns, having one in each season.

There’s few quarterbacks in the college game that have both his ability and versatility. Another season of similar stats should solidify him as a top three selection and put him deep in the conversation to be the first quarterback off the board.
