2021 NFL Draft: Best pick by every NFC West team
San Francisco 49ers: Trey Lance, QB, North Dakota State
Round 1, 3rd Overall
After a tumultuous season full of injuries, the San Francisco 49ers should get back on track in 2021. Bringing Trent Williams back was a must, and the signing of Alex Mack could prove beneficial. Jason Verrett and Jaquiski Tartt returning to the secondary is important as well.
The 49ers made a massive move before the 2021 NFL Draft started, trading up from the 12th spot to the third overall pick. They gave up a king’s ransom for the pick, but it was ultimately worth it to secure a potential franchise quarterback with the upside of Trey Lance.
Despite a limited amount of starts in college, Lance brings immense tools to the table and a great understanding of the game. While his rocket arm, great touch on the football, and powerful running style all stand out, it’s his mechanics and decision making that will get him on the field sooner rather than later. His throwing motion, while a little long at times, has slowly been getting better this offseason. His turnover-averse game is something that translates well, and the 49ers will use his athleticism to their advantage in the offense.
Lance could be the quarterback that puts this very good roster over the top, and could help them reach a Super Bowl and finish the job this time.
