The running game is a hallmark for the Iowa Hawkeyes under head coach Kirk Ferentz. Ferentz and the Hawkeyes crank out NFL-caliber offensive linemen on an annual basis and the running game is typically strong at Iowa because of the way those linemen paving the way, so why don’t more running backs from this program find success at the NFL level? Tyler Goodson is a possible 2022 NFL Draft prospect who could change things a bit.

Goodson is entering his third year in the Iowa Hawkeyes program after being recruited as a three-star prospect in the state of Georgia.

Georgia has not exactly been a historical pipeline for the Iowa program but they are certainly not complaining about having Goodson, who was a first-team All-Big Ten selection in the 2020 season.

He ran for 762 yards in eight games with seven touchdowns and also added 15 receptions for 152 yards.

Goodson has shown over the course of two seasons that he has some big-play ability even if his long speed is not exactly where you would want it to be for a player who is under 200 pounds.

2022 NFL Draft: Don’t sleep on Tyler Goodson

Goodson might be a 4.5-speed player, but he’s explosive in short areas and has outstanding vision, agility, and ability to make you miss in the open field with video game-like cuts and spin moves.

Goodson is an outstanding receiver out of the backfield and a reliable workhorse in the running game despite a sub-200 pound frame.

He does a really good job of navigating his way through traffic and keeping his legs moving through contact. Even though he’s not the biggest back, Goodson has good contact balance and is underrated when it comes to fighting for extra yardage.

Just two years into his college career, Goodson definitely has the look of a future NFL running back. He may not be a day one or even day two prospect at the position, but somewhere between the 3rd-5th round, he’s going to be an outstanding value for some team and his stock can rise substantially with another big season in 2021.

Especially if Goodson’s usage as a receiver ramps up in 2021, NFL teams are going to be really high on him and his stock should soar.
