Philadelphia Eagles: Devonta Smith, WR, Alabama

Round 1, 10th Overall

The Eagles made headlines before the 2021 NFL Draft even began, moving back six spots with the Miami Dolphins via a trade. This netted them another first-round pick in 2022 but had many experts puzzled. Many believed they might be out of range of adding a playmaker and definitely moved out of range to draft a potential franchise quarterback.

As it turns out, they were still in position to get a top playmaker in the draft. They moved up two spots with Dallas to select Alabama wide receiver and Heisman trophy winner Devonta Smith, just ahead of the Giants, who had planned to do so.

Smith was easily the best selection for the Eagles in the 2021 NFL Draft. Despite drafting Jalen Reagor in the first round a year before, Smith gives Philadelphia a true number one in the passing game who can win in so many ways. He has the release package and skill set to create and sustain initial separation and has a well-developed route tree. Smith has incredible hands and body control and plays much bigger than his size.

In Nick Sirianni’s offense, which will focus on plenty of quick game passing concepts, Smith will thrive. He will also be a great security blanket for Jalen Hurts as he develops. The Hurts to Smith connection will be a fun one to watch in 2021.
