Indianapolis Colts 2021 NFL Draft grades: More juice for the pass rush
On a defense that struggled to contain offenses when in zone coverage, it felt like more was needed to help this unit, especially at corner. Bringing Rhodes back may have eased that a bit, but the Indianapolis Colts went after it in the fifth round, selecting Florida safety Shawn Davis.
Davis continues the trend of Ballard taking an interest in Senior Bowl players, as he showed off his physical style of play in coverage during 1v1s in Mobile. His aggressiveness shows up in spades on tape, and he willingly contributes in run support near the line of scrimmage.
The issue for him is his play in space, where he will tend to miss tackles against more elusive competition. His angles aren’t great either and it’s hard to imagine him succeeding on the back end of the defense. He will need to compete with guys like George Odum and Sean Davis for snaps as a rookie but likely ends up on special teams to start the season.
This pick was a questionable one from the start. He joins an extremely deep room that felt strong and in no need of another player. With tackle and corner still not addressed at this juncture, the process here was a little stunning.
