Green Bay Packers 2021 NFL Draft grades: Needs addressed very well
Day two for the Green Bay Packers in the 2021 NFL Draft focused on the offensive side of the ball, which was a sigh of relief for Packers fans. First, they answered the lingering question of who would replace Corey Linsley at center, selecting Ohio State center Josh Myers with the 62nd selection.
The pick wasn’t well-received, mostly because of the centers still on the board. Many analysts labeled Oklahoma’s Creed Humphrey as the top center in the class, and he slipped all the way to the end of round two. Quinn Meinerz, another player the Packers were linked to, was also available at this spot.
Instead, the Packers went with Myers, and the big reason why was fit. While Humphrey and Meinerz are both talented players, it was hard to imagine either making the impact Linsley did in a primarily zone running scheme, which feeds off of the center getting off the ball quickly to gain early leverage, either at the line or at the second level.
Myers has flashed that ability, and while he isn’t quite consistent with it yet, he still provides the explosion on tape necessary for Matt LaFleur’s offense. While it may have been a slight reach, the fit makes perfect sense in Green Bay.
