Denver Broncos 2021 NFL Draft: 5th-round picks

5 (152): Caden Sterns, S, Texas

Starting with the Quinn Meinerz selection in round three, Caden Sterns was the third in a trio of selections where the Denver Broncos perhaps prioritized athleticism and rare athletes at specific positions compared to actual production.

Caden Sterns was a top recruit coming out of high school and picked off four passes in his freshman year at Texas, but unfortunately, he was unable to match that production in his sophomore or junior seasons.

A team captain, Sterns has leadership qualities and will give the Denver Broncos a special teams ace, but even in round five, there is some risk involved with this pick with Sterns’ seemingly declining production.

Grade: C

5 (164): Jamar Johnson, S, Indiana

Going back-to-back safeties was actually a necessary move for the Denver Broncos, especially given the value of a player like Jamar Johnson here.

While Sterns was picked based on athleticism and potential, Johnson was picked based on production. He did not really emerge until later in his career with Indiana, but he was so productive that he became on of the draft’s hottest risers in recent weeks.

Johnson picked off seven passes on less than 50 targets into his coverage at Indiana. He has a natural feel for attacking the football and could be a future starter alongside Justin Simmons.

Grade: B+
