2021 NFL Draft: Recap and analysis of every pick for all 32 teams
1 (21): Kwity Paye, EDGE, Michigan
With needs at tackle and off the edge defensively, the Colts saw better value in Kwity Paye than the available tackles on the board.
With a relatively weak class of both edge guys and defensive linemen in general, Paye was perhaps undervalued. He has tremendous quickness off the edge and plays with natural power. He should be an impact starter immediately for the Colts.
2 (54): Dayo Odeyingbo, EDGE, Vanderbilt
Considering there were some health concerns with Odeyingbo, it’s somewhat surprising the Colts prioritized him here. With that being said, if he can stay healthy, they effectively solved their edge position for the foreseeable future and got two guys that can live in the offensive backfield whether they are 8-sack guys or 12-sack guys.
4 (127): Kylen Granson, TE, SMU
An intriguing pass-catching option at the tight end position, Granson caught 14 touchdowns over the last two seasons at SMU. He doesn’t have ideal size for the tight end position but he compares favorably to Trey Burton.
5 (165): Shawn Davis, S, Florida
Davis is a very intriguing athlete at the safety/nickel position who had five interceptions over the past two seasons. The Colts are taking a shot on his upside here and understandably so.
6 (218): Sam Ehlinger, QB, Texas
One of the best QBs in Texas history, Ehlinger has a shot to stick in the NFL for a long time as a high-end backup and spot-starter.
7 (229): Mike Strachan, WR, Charleston
With his size, speed, and ball-tracking ability, Strachan could be a seventh-round steal for the Colts.
7 (248): Will Fries, G, Penn State
Fries has played every position but center on the offensive line for Penn State, but he could probably do that as well. He should be valuable depth on the interior at the next level.
