Green Bay Packers: 3 moves to make to keep Aaron Rodgers around
1. Get Rodgers a shiny new contract
Rodgers has stated before that his initial desire was to play his entire career for one team. Although Jordan Love’s arrival seemed to throw a wrench in those plans, there’s no guarantee that Love would ever play in Green Bay with Rodgers around, just like there was no guarantee that Jimmy Garoppolo was for sure taking Tom Brady’s job in New England with the Patriots.
Since Rodgers signed his four-year, $134 million contract in 2018, that average annual figure has become dated, to say the least.
Rodgers is currently tied for the fifth-highest figure in the league (with Jared Goff) at $33.5 million per year. He’s $500K in average annual value above Kirk Cousins.
Patrick Mahomes currently leads the way at $45 million per season on his new contract with the Chiefs and at Rodgers’ age, I’m not sure he’s going to necessarily exceed that. But Rodgers should be able to get at least $40 million per year, whether he ultimately sticks in Green Bay or gets traded to another team.
The Packers could re-do Rodgers’ deal for maybe three years, $120 million with the majority of it guaranteed. As enticing as the long-term gig at Jeopardy might be, it’s tough to turn down $120 million no matter who you are.
Re-negotiating Rodgers’ contract would also allow the Packers to potentially increase their available cap space in 2021 so they can make some of the other fun moves on this list.
