2021 NFL Draft: Walker Little leads top 4 most confusing 2nd-round picks
The Indianapolis Colts entered the 2021 NFL Draft with a gaping hole at left tackle, and that’s how they left it.
Just like the Pittsburgh Steelers one pick later, the Colts failed to bring in a left tackle with either of their top two selections, which came as quite a surprise.
The Colts’ top pick was spent on Michigan pass rusher Kwity Paye, and that selection was neither surprising nor was it poor value. There were plenty of offensive tackles on the board that the Colts could have moved up the board in the second round to address that need.
They opted not to, and instead took the talented Dayo Odeyingbo out of Vanderbilt.
Inherently, this is not a bad pick or player. The Colts’ passing up on a serious need at left tackle is what’s confusing here, especially considering Odeyingbo is coming off of an Achilles injury.
Odeyingbo projects as a down lineman in a 3-4 defense who can kick inside on passing downs, so it’s not like the Colts doubled down on edge players who are exactly the same here, but when you make the kind of investment they did in Carson Wentz, you have to protect that investment.
They did not do that and are still in the market for free agent tackles post-draft.
