Chicago Bears 2021 NFL Draft grades after wild weekend
Grade: B+
David Montgomery took a huge step in his second season with the Chicago Bears, rushing for over 1,000 yards and averaging 4.3 yards per carry. Unfortunately, he had absolutely no support behind him.
After Tarik Cohen went down with an injury, the team’s next leading rusher became Cordarrelle Patterson, who had just 232 yards. With Patterson leaving in free agency and Cohen returning off of a serious injury, adding some more depth in the backfield made a lot of sense.
Khalil Herbert put up some pretty ridiculous numbers in his lone season with the Hokies (transfer from Kansas). He rushed for 1,183 yards while averaging 7.6 yards per carry and scoring 8 touchdowns.
He was one of just three running backs in the entire country to rush for over 1,000 yards while averaging 7.6ypc. That type of production in the ACC should translate well and his three-down skill set could see Herbert compete with Damien Williams as the primary backup behind Montgomery.
Grade: B+
With their fifth straight offensive selection, the Chicago Bears nabbed North Carolina wide receiver, Dazz Newsome, with the 221st overall pick in the sixth round. Newsome was the lesser talked about Tar Heel receiver behind Dyami Brown, but he is still a really nice get for Chicago this late in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Newsome should add some needed depth as a slot receiver for the Bears. He isn’t a burner by any means but he can still eat up yards with a mixture of vision and contact balance. Newsome also has plenty of experience as a punt returner, so if those rumors of Anthony Miller being shopped come to fruition, he could be the replacement there. While I think they should have addressed the wide receiver position a little earlier, this is good value for Newsome.
