2021 NFL Draft: San Francisco 49ers wise to take Trey Lance at No. 3
The San Francisco 49ers avoided disaster. Rumors surrounding Mac Jones being the pick for Kyle Shanahan and company at No. 3 did not come true as the 49ers took Trey Lance with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Lance comes to the NFL as a premier quarterback prospect out of North Dakota State. He has all of the tools needed to be a star at the next level and undoubtedly has a massive ceiling. Lance is the kind of prospect who is worth the massive investment that the 49ers made in their major trade up the board.
The North Dakota State product displays impressive natural arm talent, showing the ability to hit any throw on the football field. His accuracy can be a bit inconsistent at times, but Lance has flashes of being an extremely accurate passer to all levels of the field. Make no mistake about it, there are some absolute dimes scattered throughout his tape.

As impressive as Lance is as a passer, he is arguably even better as a runner. Lance displays an impressive combination of speed, quickness and power when he decides to tuck the ball and run. He is the kind of player who can be schemed touches as a runner and also shows the ability to tuck it and run when needed.
In Lance, the San Francisco 49ers find a quarterback who can control the game as both a runner and a passer. He does a great job of standing tall in the pocket and working within the offensive, but can also improvise and make plays on the fly when the play breaks down.

Lance lands in an absolutely perfect situation for his skill-set and quickly has a chance to become one of the premier quarterbacks in the entire league.
