The new regime for the Detroit Lions are getting things started right. With the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, general manager Brad Holmes and company took arguably the safest prospect in the entire class, offensive tackle Penei Sewell.

Sewell enters the league as a ready-made offensive tackle prospect who also has massive upside at the next level. Taylor Decker has the left tackle spot locked down in Detroit, but Sewell should be able to come in and immediately provide massive value as the team’s starting right tackle. No matter where he lines up, Sewell will shine for the Detroit Lions.

In Sewell, the Lions snag themselves an offensive tackle who displays an incredible combination of power and athleticism up front. Sewell is extremely quick off of the ball and moves incredibly well in space. He is an absolute weapon in the screen in the game, showing the ability to get out in space and make blocks on defenders who should be well out of his range.

While his athletic ability is consistently impressive, do not sleep on Sewell’s impressive power at the point of attack. He is a big and physical blocker who can manhandle defenders in the run game and as a pass protector. Sewell does a great job of taking care of his responsibility on the first level and consistently shines when attacking the second level.

Sewell’s quick feet, long arms and strong hands also stand out in pass protection. He does a fantastic job of mirroring opposing edge rushers, displays a quick and accurate initial strike, and does a great job of remaining patient throughout the rep.

The Detroit Lions entered the 2021 NFL Draft with a massive need at the wide receiver position. Taking DeVonta Smith here at No. 7 had to be tempting. That being said, reaching for need is never a great idea. Sewell was the best player remaining and was undoubtedly a great pick for Detroit. He is going to be a strong starting offensive lineman for this team for many years.
