Atlanta Falcons: Top first-round targets in the 2021 NFL Draft
3. Patrick Surtain II, CB, Alabama
Of course, this a move that would likely mean a trade back. A partner like the Denver Broncos, who could be eyeing a quarterback, makes this move possible. The move itself isn’t too far back to lose out on an elite player in the class, and Patrick Surtain II would make a ton of sense in Atlanta.
Yes, obviously the Atlanta Falcons selected Clemson corner, A.J. Terrell, in the first round of the 2020 draft, but that doesn’t mean the need disappeared right then. As mentioned earlier, both Oliver and Sheffield have their question marks. Ultimately, this can turn into a best player available move, and it’s hard to imagine Surtain wouldn’t be near the top in this scenario.
Surtain is an excellent prospect at the corner spot. His patience at the line of scrimmage is well-documented, and he consistently doesn’t move off staying square to fakes by wide receivers. He’s fluid changing directions for his size and would thrive up near the line of scrimmage in press coverage. Surtain has missed some timed jumps at the catch point, but his instincts and coverage skills would be welcomed in an NFC South with plenty of wide receiver talent. He could potentially be the best defensive player in the draft.
