2021 NFL mock draft: 23rd pick

Jets GM/HC: Joe Douglas/Robert Saleh

Another slight surprise in the top 25 picks, Joe Tryon to the New York Jets (or any team here in the early to mid 20s) could be a rumor with some legs.

The New York Jets already acquired free agents Carl Lawson and Sheldon Rankins to upgrade their pass rush this offseason, but Tryon would give them another weapon off the edge to wreak havoc in Robert Saleh’s defense.

You don’t bring in a coach like Saleh and not get him some young tools to work with. Player development was one of his top strengths with the 49ers, and Tryon would be a good fit on that basis alone.

Tryon opted out of the 2020 season but he has a ton of raw talent and had 12.5 tackles for loss and 8.0 sacks a season ago.

He checked in at the Washington pro day in tremendous shape at 6-foot-5, 259 pounds with a 4.65 in. the 40-yard dash and a 35-inch vertical jump. With his long arms, strength, quickness, and upside, it’s easy to see why the league might be higher on Tryon than the mock draft machines have been.
