Detroit Lions 2021 NFL mock draft: Round 1, 7th overall

OT. Oregon. Pick Analysis. Penei Sewell. 1. player. 820. Scouting Report

The Detroit Lions have commonly connected to wide receivers throughout the 2021 NFL mock draft process, and for good reason. After losing Kenny Golladay in free agency, the Lions have a massive need at the wide receiver position and could certainly look to address that need at No. 7.

That being said, this team appears to be building for the long haul. Brad Holmes is too smart to force himself to only make a selection at a single position. The Lions are going to keep their options and will do what they think is best for the long-term health of the organization. If that is a wide receiver at No. 7, so be it. However, in this 2021 NFL mock draft, Oregon offensive tackle Penei Sewell stands out as the ideal choice.

Sewell is undoubtedly one of the most talented players in the entire 2021 NFL Draft class. He is an incredible athlete for an offensive lineman, is a big and powerful man who can dominate defenders at the point of attack and has plenty of room for growth in his game. Simply put, Sewell is a fantastic run blocker and an incredibly reliable pass protector who could quickly grow into one of the premier offensive tackles in the entire league.

With Taylor Decker on the roster, some may look at taking Sewell here as an odd fit. Decker is one of the best players on this team and is a strong option for the team at left tackle. That being said, the Lions are far from putting the finishing touches on this roster. They should be taking the best player available, no matter what position he plays. In the first round of this 2021 NFL mock draft, that player is Penei Sewell.
