NFL mock draft 2021: Justin Fields, Trey Lance help make history
By Evan Bachman
After trading back to 12 and then back up to 6 the Dolphins remain in a good spot to add a valuable piece to their offense. In this NFL mock draft scenario, with Sewell off the board, the Dolphins will almost certainly target a pass catcher.
Reuniting Tua with DeVonta Smith or Jaylen Waddle is certainly tempting, but Ja’Marr Chase is the better prospect. His combination of speed, route running, ability to make contested catches, and ability after the catch makes him one of the best wide receiver prospects in recent memory.
Not only does he have elite traits, but he’s also proven he produce at a high level against high-level competition. In 2019 he had a historic season putting up 1,780 yards and 20 touchdowns, including dominant performances against both Alabama and Clemson.
I don’t want to give the deep threat receiver label to Chase because that indicates that’s all he can when in fact he can do so much more, but his ability to win on routes down the field is quite impressive. According to PFF, in 2019 Chase caught a staggering 24 passes that were thrown 20+ yards downfield and 14 of them went for touchdowns.
He’s also a nightmare for defenses to try to bring down when he’s got the football in his hands as he’s very fast, quick, and strong. So, not only do defenses have to worry about him beating them deep, but about tackling him after short catches.
Another thing I like about Chase is his ability to come down with contested catches/ 50-50 balls. He doesn’t have elite size at 6-foot-0, 208 pounds but his body control, leaping ability, and ability to high point the ball make him very effective in jump ball situations.
