NFL mock draft 2021: Justin Fields, Trey Lance help make history
By Evan Bachman
The Falcons are in an interesting spot here, Matt Ryan likely has a few solid years left and there are some intriguing non-quarterback options. However, I think with a quarterback class like this and the fourth overall pick you have to come away with a quarterback of the future.
Atlanta is actually a pretty good situation for Trey Lance where he won’t be rushed into being ready to play right away and can develop behind a former MVP.
Lance is a good enough prospect to be the number one overall pick in some draft classes. He’s got all the physical tools necessary to develop into a phenomenal NFL quarterback, he’s got good size at 6-foot-4, 226 pounds, exceptional arm strength, and good athleticism.
The main thing that hurts Lance is that Lawrence, Wilson, and Fields all check those size, arm strength, and athleticism boxes as well, but they’ve also proven themselves at an FBS level.
With that being said however a lot of that is out of Lance’s control, it’s not his fault he only got to play one game in 2020 due to covid. In addition, even though he’s going against FCS competition he had as good of a season as you could possibly ask for in 2019, leading NDSU to a 16-0 record winning the national championship, while throwing for 28 touchdowns, no picks, and rushing for 14 touchdowns.
