NFL mock draft 2021: Justin Fields, Trey Lance help make history
By Evan Bachman
It’s become pretty clear over the past couple of months that Zach Wilson will be the pick here and after trading Sam Darnold to the Panthers has only cemented that. The Jets missed on Darnold, however, this is the perfect draft to find a franchise quarterback.
Zach Wilson isn’t a can’t miss prospect like Lawrence, however, he’s actually very similar to Lawrence from a talent perspective, as both have a rare combination of arm strength and athleticism.
Wilson is simply capable of throws that not many others are able to make, in fact as impressive as Lawrence’s numbers throwing downfield are, Wilson managed to top it last year. According to PFF, last year on passes 20+ yards downfield he completed 35 of his 56 attempts for 1,286 yards, 12 touchdowns, and a grade of 99.9.
Another thing about Wilson is his ability to scramble, extend plays, and make off-platform passes. Comparing someone to Patrick Mahomes is unfair because nobody is going to live up to that, however, this ability to make off-platform throws does remind me of Mahomes.
The Jets may not be contending for Super Bowls in the near future, but they’re heading in the right direction. Newly hired Robert Saleh is a brilliant defensive mind, they’re getting a very promising young quarterback, now they need to focus on building the roster.
