NFL mock draft 2021: Justin Fields, Trey Lance help make history
By Evan Bachman
In an ideal scenario for the Chargers a talented player at a position of need falls to them.
The biggest need for the Chargers coming into this offseason is the offensive line. I say this because it has to be a priority to protect their young quarterback and it’s clearly the weakest position group on their offense.
This tackle class features a rare talent in Penei Sewell, who is easily the top tackle in the class, but Rashawn Slater is a top ten talent in his own right.
With tackle prospects, the two biggest things I like to look for are athletic ability and consistency as a pass protector in college. Slater checks both of those boxes.
From an athleticism standpoint, there’s no doubt in my mind that he has what it takes to compete in the NFL. He is a bit undersized, but he makes up for that with how smoothly he moves and his quickness.
In pass protection, he does a good job of getting set quickly after the snap, staying on his toes, and playing loose and flexible.
He didn’t play in 2020 after opting out, but he does have three years of starting experience, including in 2019 where he only allowed five pressures and no sacks all season long.
This type of consistent production in a power five conference combined with Slater’s athleticism is pretty rare and is why he’s worthy of a top ten pick.
