NFL mock draft 2021: Justin Fields, Trey Lance help make history
By Evan Bachman
In this scenario, the Eagles would come away as one of the winners of the draft. At six they likely would have taken Ja’Marr Chase, this way they get Jaylen Waddle who’s a comparable prospect to Chase, and an extra first-round pick in next year’s draft.
Everyone knows the deal with Waddle and it’s that he can flat out fly. There’s no combine this year which is a shame because I would of like to see what time he’d put up in the 40, I would expect somewhere in the high 4.2, low 4.3 range.
That type of world-class speed is great, but it means nothing if you can’t catch the ball. We saw this play out with John Ross, who hasn’t lived up to expectations due to drop issues. At Alabama, Waddle wasn’t necessarily sure-handed, but drops were never much of an issue for him, so it shouldn’t be in the NFL either.
One thing to keep in mind with Waddle is that while he hasn’t put together a historic season like Devonta Smith or Ja’Marr Chase he was putting up some ridiculous numbers before his injury. In the four games before his injury, he had 25 catches for 557 yards and four touchdowns.
Waddle being the third receiver off the board in this scenario just shows how good of a receiver class this is and I wouldn’t be surprised if he turns out to be the best in the class.
