San Francisco 49ers mock draft: Mac Jones leads a deep class
By Kyle Edmond
Round 5, Pick 172
The San Francisco 49ers are rather set off the edge with Nick Bosa, Dee Ford, and others but adding more depth to the position would be a good move. This past season the 49ers saw injury after injury, so being better prepared for that moving forward will be key.
Adding Shaka Toney would be a big step in terms of edge depth. Over 40 games at Penn State, Toney logged 20 sacks and 28.5 tackles for loss. He also stepped up and was a big part of a defense that was missing key pieces, like Micah Parsons.
Toney would be a nice compliment behind Bosa, Ford, and company. He has the ability to step into any role and perform well, making him the ideal candidate for a depth pick.
Round 5, Pick 180
The 49ers have a lot of safeties on the roster, but beyond the two starters, there isn’t a clear answer for depth. Taking Darrick Forrest would help answer that question. Forrest did a little bit of everything at Cincinnati.
During the 2019 season, he logged over 100 tackles along with three interceptions and three passes defended. While 2020 saw five fewer games, Forrest still had two interceptions and a pass defended on the stat sheet.
Having a history of being able to tackle as well as make plays on the ball will set Forrest apart from the pack in the later rounds and make him an ideal selection for San Francisco.
