Jacksonville Jaguars address needs, depth in three-round mock draft
By Joel Deering
Second-round: 33rd overall – TE Pat Freiermuth, Penn State Nittany Lions
After drafting Trevor Lawrence with the first overall pick, I thought it would be a good idea to get him an offensive weapon. The Jacksonville Jaguars have some young, up-and-coming wide receivers in DJ Chark and Laviska Shenault for Trevor Lawrence to throw to. However, they don’t have a young, up-and-coming tight end.
They don’t have that big-bodied pass catcher in the middle of the field that every quarterback loves.
Last season, the leading receiver from the tight end position was Tyler Eifert, who caught 36 passes for 349 yards and two touchdowns. With a star rookie quarterback in Trevor Lawrence, that’s not going to cut it. Enter Penn State tight end Pat Freiermuth.
Freiermuth is widely considered the second-best tight end in this draft, behind Kyle Pitts. Maybe taking him 33rd overall was a little high, but I couldn’t risk him coming off the board before pick 45. I had to make sure the Jacksonville Jaguars got a weapon for their new quarterback, so I pulled the trigger.
Due to his size and athletic ability, Freiermuth has drawn comparisons to Rob Gronkowski. That’s a lot to live up to. Maybe he is the next Gronk, and maybe he’s not. If he can get anywhere close to that, the Jaguars have got themselves, and Trevor Lawrence, a solid offensive weapon for years to come.
