5. Gardner Minshew, QB, Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars are poised to select Trevor Lawrence with the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Behind him, they have CJ Beathard and 2020 sixth-round pick Jake Luton, who played some in 2020. They also still have Gardner Minshew, who has two years left on his rookie contract.

Minshew should be an attractive trade target for teams looking for someone to compete for a starting job or be arguably the best insurance you could have at the position behind your established starter.

It’s for that particular reason it’s hard to imagine the Jaguars parting with Minshew unless they get a truly great offer, but at the same time, who knows what Urban Meyer is thinking?

The Jaguars hosted Alex Smith on a free agent visit before he decided to retire. That could have been a key to Minshew being traded (or not). Without Smith on the roster, the Jaguars’ quarterback depth chart is a bit different than it otherwise could have been.

Although they are undoubtedly banking on Lawrence being the guy, Jacksonville has to hedge its bets at quarterback just like every other team in the league.

Smart money might be on Minshew returning to Jacksonville as Lawrence’s backup, but don’t be surprised if a team like the Denver Broncos doesn’t get the QB of their choice in the first round and comes calling for Minshew.
