Denver Broncos mock draft: Trey Lance leads 7-round haul
The idea of Trey Lance and the Denver Broncos is a fascinating one to explore.
On the one hand, Lance’s talent is undeniable. He is probably the most gifted runner at the quarterback position and, at least stylistically, he would present a total change in philosophy from what the team has prioritized in John Elway’s tenure as general manager (and even long before that).
Lance has a live arm and he’s known for his tremendous work ethic and coachability.
There is definitely a lot to like about Lance, but there are also major question marks.
This guy played in just 17 collegiate games, none of which were against FBS competition. He had six games among those 17 starts where he completed 56.5 percent of his passes or less.
The Denver Broncos seem built to be airing it out with their receiver group including Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler, Noah Fant, and others. Lance threw an average of 19 passes per game in his 17 starts at NDSU while the team averaged 45 rush attempts per game.
Again, this would seem to be a shift in offensive philosophy, or maybe the Denver Broncos would try to grow Lance into more of a full-time passer who can also run rather than a part-time guy in both areas.
Lance certainly has the arm talent to be able to do that at the next level, and he has the running ability to help the team win while he learns on the job.
The idea of adding Lance may not overly appeal to Drew Lock, but the Broncos could also keep Lock in the event they added Lance and let him open the season as the starter until Lance is ready. If Lock plays well, he or Lance could become future trade bait.
