2021 NFL Mock Draft: 3rd pick

player. Scouting Report. Mac Jones. 3. 42. Pick Analysis. QB. Alabama

Did the San Francisco 49ers seriously trade up to the third overall pick for Mac Jones?

It sure seems headed in that direction.

Barring something changing — which it very well could — it’s hard to deny a literal report from Adam Schefter of ESPN that Jones will be the 49ers’ selection here.

Although the 49ers are planning to attend the pro days of both Justin Fields and Trey Lance, who are holding second pro days for teams, it’s hard to know whether they are really keeping an open mind or just trying to keep those optics for the drama of the NFL Draft.

John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan passed on Justin Fields’ original pro day to go see Mac Jones, which could ultimately mean nothing but it’s worth noting at this point.

Jones, for all of the flak he takes from some in the NFL Draft world and in the media, is a very accurate passer to all levels of the field with an excellent understanding of reading defenses, throwing accurately under pressure, and taking shots deep.

Although the ‘prototype’ is probably thrown around too much when it comes to Kyle Shanahan’s ideal QB, Jones fits the mold of the guys Shanahan has had the most success with at the NFL level.

Are the 49ers buying the Mac Jones hype? Right now, it seems that way.
