NFL Mock Draft 2021: Patriots, Washington trade up in 3-round mock
2021 NFL Mock Draft: 25th pick
The Jacksonville Jaguars are playing the long game in this draft with all of their selections, and although the safety position is not the most important in terms of positional value this high in the draft, Trevon Moehrig is a player who is worth the investment.
Moehrig won the Jim Thorpe Award in 2020 as the best defensive back in the country, and he did it not just by playing a center field safety position but by playing all over the defensive formation and making life difficult on opposing offensive coordinators.
Moehrig reads the quarterback so well and he seems to have a sixth sense when it comes to the timing of the quarterback releasing the ball. He breaks on plays so quickly it can seem like TCU is out playing with 12 defenders at times.
The Jacksonville Jaguars could go any direction with this pick, but they need to continue upgrading the secondary. The team invested a first-round pick in CJ Henderson last year and they brought in veteran free agent Shaquill Griffin in 2021 on a big-money deal.
Adding a playmaker at safety is going to strengthen the back end of this Jaguars defense and give Trevor Lawrence and the opportunity to put more points on the board.
Moehrig is a guy who can help new head coach Urban Meyer reshape the culture in the organization and be a leader by example. He’s a very smart player who can be relied upon being put in multiple positions.
