2021 NFL Draft safety rankings: Grant and Moehrig battle for the top spot
By John Blair
6. James Wiggins, Cincinnati
6-foot, 205 pounds
2021 NFL Draft grade: Fourth round
A safety who put up outstanding testing numbers is James Wiggins of Cincinnati. At his pro day, he ran a 4.4 40-yard dash and also posted a 38-inch vertical jump. He has been impressive on the field as well. In 2018 he picked off four passes and took three back for touchdowns. He is also a physical safety who is good in run support.
While Wiggins has looked good when on the field, staying on the field has been an issue for him. He missed the entire 2019 season due to a torn ACL and also missed time last year due to injuries. One of the concerns with him as a player is he is not the most fluid athlete. This hurts him when it comes to changing directions and his ability to stick with quicker receivers. Due to this deficiency, he might be best off as a strong safety in the NFL.
7. Jamar Johnson, Indiana
6-foot-2, 205 pounds
2021 NFL Draft grade: Fourth round
Jamar Johnson had a breakout year this past season as he finally broke into the starting lineup for the Hoosiers. He finished the year with four interceptions and was named to the All-Big Ten team. As a prospect, Johnson is a complete player who is willing to come up and support the run in addition to showing strong ball skills.
Even though Johnson can contribute in all areas of the game, he might have a limited upside overall. This is due to him being an average overall athlete who displays only average speed. He did not help himself when it came to answering questions about his speed either when he ran a 4.58 40-yard dash at his pro day. He also has some character questions due to him being arrested in 2018 and getting kicked out of a game last year because he threw a punch.
