2021 NFL Draft grade Second round

Trevon Moehrig has made an impact at TCU from day one. As a freshman, he was the team’s special teams MVP. He was named All-Big 12 as a sophomore after picking up four interceptions on the year. As a junior in 2020, he won the Jim Thorpe award after breaking up nine passes and recording two interceptions in just ten games. Overall, Moehrig finished his college career with 124 tackles, 21 passes defended and seven interceptions.

The top trait with Moehrig is his cover skills. He shows fluid hips in coverage and displays good awareness in this area. This awareness is part of the reason he has been such a ball hawk in the secondary the past two seasons with his nine takeaways finishing second in the nation. Teams will also like the fact that he has been a key contributor on TCU’s special team’s units, as he will likely be asked to do the same in the NFL.

While Moehring is a very good cover man he does have some issues when it comes to supporting the run. The first issue is that he plays out of control at times which leads to him missing tackles. He also lacks great strength in this area and is more of a tackler who drags people down instead of delivering the big hit. He could improve his discipline in coverage as well since he likes to peek into the backfield a little too much. This lack of eye discipline can lead to him getting beat on double moves.

Overall, Moehrig should be able to develop into a starting free safety in the NFL and with better discipline could compete for a Pro Bowl spot in a couple of years. While he has a second-round grade it would not be a big shock if a team took him at the end of the first round.
