With so many offensive players going early in this NFL mock draft, the Dallas Cowboys were able to trade back a few spots, pick up some extra draft capital and still land one of their premier targets. The Cowboys need a ton of help on the defensive side of the ball and Alabama cornerback Patrick Surtain II stands out as a great target for the team.
Surtain is a big and long cornerback prospect who shines in press-man coverage. He displays quick feet at all times and attacks the ball in the air extremely well. Surtain is a natural fluid and instinctual cornerback prospect who always seems to be in the right place in coverage. He also does a great job of remaining calm throughout the coverage rep.

While many have questioned whether Surtain has the speed needed to keep up with dynamic speed receivers at the next level, he quieted those doubters with an impressive athletic performance at his Pro Day. Surtain is not an elite athlete at the cornerback position but he has enough speed to keep up with most wide receivers in the deep passing game.
Simply put, Surtain is a No. 1 cornerback in the making who could come in and make an immediate impact for the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys have a talented roster and could certainly compete for a post-season spot with Dak Prescott returning next season but their defense needs to be better. Adding Surtain to the mix would be a massive step in the right direction.
