2021 NFL Draft: Washington trades up for Justin Fields in NFL mock draft

TRADE: Detroit trades No. 7 to Washington for No. 19 and other picks
If any Washington fans are hesitant about taking another Ohio State quarterback after everything that happened with Dwayne Haskins, I don’t blame you. But the reality is, Washington still needs a quarterback. Signing Ryan Fitzpatrick will help create a bridge, but there isn’t a long-term answer on the roster yet to bridge to and picking at No. 19 won’t get the job done.
For that reason, Washington makes the first trade in this mock draft by moving with the Detroit Lions. The Lions are aiming towards a complete rebuild or at least an identity shift, so adding assets will be key.
As for Washington, Fields has received comparisons to Cam Newton who had success with Ron Rivera in Carolina. If Rivera wants to essentially reinvent that success, Fields fits the bill. Plus, playing with Fitzpatrick could be the perfect learning tool for Fields.
Washington’s offense is built on speed with Antonio Gibson, Terry McLaurin and now Curtis Samuel, two of which are former Buckeyes. Adding Fields to the mix not only adds another Buckeye but even more speed to the explosive offense. The move up to get Fields could be costly, but Washington might be out of other options if this draft unfolds this way at the quarterback position.
