2021 NFL Draft: Washington trades up for Justin Fields in NFL mock draft
By Kyle Edmond
Locking up Dak Prescott was huge for the Dallas Cowboys. The weapons on the offensive side of the ball are impressive. The issue is, they can’t stop the ball on defense. Letting the opponent put up 40 points nearly every game over some stretches during this past season was the biggest issue for the Cowboys, even before Prescott was injured.
With that being said, the Cowboys need to go defense here and more specifically secondary. They’ve attempted to find the right pieces in the past, but haven’t been able to put them together. Now, they luck out. With Denver going quarterback, the top cornerback in the 2021 NFL Draft falls right to them at No. 10.
For Patrick Surtain II, the most impressive part of his game is to track the ball. As a freshman in 2018 he had seven passes defended, then eight in 2019 and nine in 2020 for 24 over just three seasons in addition to four career interceptions and 116 tackles.
Taking Trevon Diggs in the second round last year out of Alabama, Surtain would join a former teammate in Dallas and could be the missing piece to this Cowboys’ secondary that they’ve been trying to find for a long time.
