NFL Mock Draft 2021: 2 rounds post-free agency first wave
2021 NFL mock draft: 9th pick
Detroit Lions key additions so far
- QB Jared Goff
- WR Tyrell Williams
- RB Jamaal Williams
- TE Josh Hill
- DL Michael Brockers
- LB Shaun Dion Hamilton
For the first time since their 0-16 campaign in 2008, the Detroit Lions will have a different QB1 than Matthew Stafford, who was shipped off to the Los Angeles Rams for Jared Goff and a bounty of draft selections.
The Lions will get first-round picks from the Rams in 2022 and 2023, but I’m not so sure they are done accumulating selections. Hence, a trade down in this scenario with the Denver Broncos.
Even after trading down, the Lions come away with a big-time playmaker at a position of need in Heisman winner De’Vonta Smith.
Smith is slight in size and stature, but he is such a presence as an all-around receiver.
The Lions are poised to lose Kenny Golladay in free agency, and while bringing in Tyrell Williams as a possible reclamation project is nice, they need to put more pieces in place to help Jared Goff succeed right away.
Smith would immediately be the WR1 in Detroit and would likely be counted on to eat up the most targets of anyone on the team in his rookie season if he’s drafted there.
