2021 NFL mock draft: 4th pick

Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. QB. Trey Lance. player. North Dakota State. 4. 44

Atlanta Falcons key additions so far

  • TE Lee Smith
  • OLB Brandon Copeland

The Atlanta Falcons have a new regime with GM Terry Fontenot coming over from the New Orleans Saints and head coach Arthur Smith coming from the Tennessee Titans.

You can just about take it to the bank that anytime a franchise brings in two new people at those positions, they are getting a new quarterback as well.

In this mock draft scenario, the Falcons go for the high upside prospect Trey Lance, who has all of the physical tools to be successful at the next level — he just may be in need of some seasoning.

Lance’s 2019 redshirt freshman season — the only one he started at North Dakota State — was nothing short of outstanding statistically. He finished with 42 total touchdowns (28 passing, 14 rushing) and zero interceptions.

He did throw some picks in the NDSU ‘showcase’ game against Central Arkansas in 2020, but also flashed his tremendous ability to make plays both as a passer and runner.

The offense that Arthur Smith was running in Tennessee with Ryan Tannehill should be a perfect fit in the NFL for Trey Lance. It might take him a year (or part of one) to get up to speed but he could be a great fit for the way the NFL is trending, what Smith likes to do, and helping the Falcons transition out of the Matt Ryan era in the next year or so.
