2021 NFL Mock Draft: 31st pick

Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. OT. 124. Texas. Samuel Cosmi. 31. player

Kansas City Chiefs key additions so far

  • OG Joe Thuney
  • OL Kyle Long

The Chiefs surprised just about everyone when they cut not only former first overall pick Eric Fisher at the left tackle position but also Mitchell Schwartz, arguably the league’s best right tackle over the last five years or so.

Without Fisher and Schwartz, the Chiefs began reshaping their offensive line by adding Patriots left guard Joe Thuney and former Bears right guard Kyle Long.

What is to become of Laurent Duvernay-Tardif?

The Chiefs also re-signed Mike Remmers, so they still need to fill another tackle spot unless they are projecting Lucas Niang as a starter there. It would make more sense for Niang to play his college position of right tackle, but we will soon find out.

At this juncture, the Chiefs will have to consider what the board will look like the next time they are on the clock. Samuel Cosmi has freakish athletic ability for his size and he could be a bit of a project at the next level, but he would have a great veteran next to him in Thuney.

At this point in the first round, the Chiefs are definitely drafting for need which is kind of a dangerous place to be, and they also have needs to address defensively at some point, but Patrick Mahomes’ protection is of paramount importance.

We’ll see if Eric Fisher returns prior to the draft to change this projection.
