San Francisco 49ers key additions so far

  • OL Alex Mack
  • EDGE Samson Ebukam

The San Francisco 49ers have focused their free agency efforts on re-signing their own guys, primarily focusing in on left tackle Trent Williams who signed a massive six-year deal worth more than $138 million in total money and $53.9 million in guarantees.

After re-signing Williams, the 49ers brought in an old friend of Kyle Shanahan’s, center Alex Mack to help solidify that offensive interior.

Defensively, the 49ers brought back Jason Verrett and Emmanuel Moseley and poached pass rusher Samson Ebukam from their rival Los Angeles Rams.

The 49ers’ roster looks primed to make another run if they can stay healthy, which was a huge ordeal in 2020.

So why Mac Jones?

Jones seems to be the type of quarterback Kyle Shanahan has had the most success with in his time as an NFL coach.

Dating back to his time in Washington with Kirk Cousins, then with Brian Hoyer in Cleveland (if you want to count that year), followed by his time in Atlanta with Matt Ryan, then in San Francisco with Jimmy Garoppolo.

Mac Jones is a very similar type of player to those guys. I keep trying to pencil in the more mobile quarterback prospects with athleticism and big-time traits, but Jones seems to be the type of player Shanahan prefers.

He’s athletic enough to run the boots that Shanahan will call and Jones is one of the more pro-ready guys when it comes to processing things quickly and making fast decisions with the ball.

This might not be the most exciting prospect at the quarterback position but Mac Jones could have a long career working with Kyle Shanahan.
