NFL free agency: Five players who would be great value signings
By John Blair
This is the time of the year that gives hope to fans of teams that have struggled on the field the previous season. Two teams that have high hopes as we enter free agency are the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets who have the most salary-cap space available. Unfortunately, the track record for teams that spend a lot of money in free agency is not good as these teams usually aren’t able to turn around their success rate on the field despite spending big money.
Instead, the teams that find key contributors at low salaries are the teams that do the best. The five players in this article could turn out to be significant contributors next season, and come with a relatively low price tag.
2021 NFL Free Agency: T.Y. Hilton, WR, Indianapolis Colts
One of the better deep threats in the NFL that will be a free agent this offseason is Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton. Last season, Hilton led the Colts in receiving yards despite seeing a limited role in the 2020 season. He finished the year with 762 yards and had five touchdowns which tied for second on the team.
The biggest concern with Hilton is that he has seen a drop in production over the past couple of years. Last season, he had the least amount of yards in a season that he played in over 10 games in his career. He also saw his yards per catch drop to 13.6 which is the third-lowest average he has seen in his career. Another issue with Hilton is that he is currently 31-years-old, and has likely seen his better days.
While the Colts would still like to re-sign Hilton, they likely won’t unless they can get him on the cheap. One team that would make a lot of sense for Hilton is the Green Bay Packers, as he could be a deep threat for the Packers and would be playing with one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in Aaron Rodgers. He would also give the team a veteran while younger players Allen Lazard and Marquez Valdes-Scantling continue to develop.
